No Bake Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Seven Layer Bars Cookies

You’ve got a potluck at work, you can’t take Paula’s great aunt Martha’s Jell-O fruit ring anymore, so you volunteer to bring dessert.  You think you’re being quite the team player when you announce that you’ll bring dessert and are taking requests.  Shouts of chocolate and peanut butter recipes begin bombarding your ears, cookie recipes, cake recipes….somewhere in the never ending din you realize that you aren’t the only one who hated that jiggly mass of neon color and fake fruit.  Feeling all proud of yourself, because you are going to rescue your co-workers taste buds, you suddenly remember that you can’t bake.

No-Bake-Chocolate-Peanut-Butter-Cookies Have no fear, there are lots of variations on chocolate and peanut butter no bake cookie recipes out there.  After you resign yourself to making these delicious sounding delicacies (I can verify for you that they are really good), you realize that you will never live it down if you try to foist a turd looking dessert on your co-workers (they’re such an unforgiving, ungrateful bunch of barbarians aren’t they?).  Now what?

These seven layer bars take the best of the dessert world and layer them all into one little no bake cookie nirvana!  You no doubt remember those marshmallow cereal squares from childhood.  Well, these take that and kick it up a notch by adding a layer of light and fluffy peanut butter, a crunchy salty layer of pretzels, a rich layer of chocolate and then another layer of cornflake marshmallow decadence.  And to finish it off with style, these crunchy little squares of deliciousness don a coat of white chocolate and sprinkles.

Relationship Advice

Before I made these yummy treats I decided to get a little input from Craig.  I’m not sure why I did this, but every once in a while I have a lapse in judgement and seek his commentary.  I suppose it has something to do with that “get your kids involved” mantra (yes, I roll Craig and our dog into the children category on a regular basis).  So I asked him if he liked Rice Krispie treats as a kid.  I got the expected shoulder shrug, but when I pressed further I learned that he really liked them better with Corn Chex.  When he saw that I came back from the store with Corn Flakes he proceeded to tell me how much he disliked Corn Flakes and marshmallows and would not be eating any of these.  (I wasn’t overly convinced of this statement after having heard the same thing when I made the homemade beef jerky.)

Fast forward a few hours and add in an empty house.  I came home to find several pieces of these ‘missing’ from their container.  When questioned about their taste, I got a sheepish “they’re ok.”  The next morning I found that he had helped himself to more of the pieces that had been in the refrigerator.  When I asked him if he was sure that they were just ok,  I got the true confession that they were really good and that he didn’t know what he was talking about when he said that he didn’t like what I was making.

Why is this in the relationship advice area?  Because a lot of the time, we don’t really know what we like (or don’t like).  If you feel, in your gut, that your significant other would like it – they probably will.  And what’s the harm if they don’t?  So they tell you they don’t like it, is it physically going to hurt you or anyone else?  Is anyone going to lose their life over it?  If the answers to these questions is no, then go for it.  Getting out of your comfort zone is a good thing.  (And I’m not just talking about food here.)
