Classic Cocktail Recipe: The Salty Dog

The classic cocktail.  It is just as it’s name suggests…classic.  Nothing frilly, nothing new added or changed.  The Salty Dog is exactly that, a classic cocktail that requires no embellishment.

The Salty Dog consists of three ingredients: vodka, grapefruit juice and course salt – that’s it.  Well, some say that the alcohol should be gin, but either way, it’s a three ingredient cocktail.  If you don’t want the salt, leave it out and you have another classic cocktail called The Greyhound.

This is one of those drinks that’s as easy to drink as it is to make.  It’s in the same grouping as The Screwdriver, Cape Codder or Rum and Coke.

While The Salty Dog makes for a fantastic summertime libation with it’s tangy and refreshing grapefruit juice, why not take advantage of  the grapefruits that are in season right now?  There are no rules regarding whether you use white or pink grapefruit juice either.

I’m a sucker for pink grapefruit.  I buy them all season long and eat them like an orange, just peel ‘em and eat the sections.  I make Craig cringe as he thinks about their sourness and my eyes roll back in my head because I just love that sensation.  So at any given moment, I’ve got a pile of them sitting in my fruit bowl and I decided to juice a couple of them to make this classic cocktail.

The recipe couldn’t be simpler either: 2 ounces of vodka topped of with juice.  So why not juice up some pink grapefruits, make a batch of cocktails (because you’ll be challenged to only have one Salty Dog) and kick back this weekend.  Summer is right around the corner and this is a perfect way to get ready for those long, hot, sunny days.

Oh, and if you’re lucky enough to be able to find cocktail grapefruit, those would taste fantastic in this classic cocktail as well.
