This cocoa banana smoothie is another one of those recipes that I “stole” from a juice cleanse/detox program. They wanted to charge $12 for a bottle of this meal replacement smoothie. I almost choked on my hot lemon water when I read that. Yes, I really do drink hot lemon water and have been doing it since long before Gwyneth Paltrow started touting it.
Like a lot of other people, I started my healthier eating on January 1. Believe it or not, I’ve actually kept it up. One of the things I started doing was drinking this banana smoothie every morning for breakfast. It fills me up and tastes fantastic. I actually start craving it when I roll out of bed. So what’s in it?
What makes this smoothie recipe so good is that it’s not all icy. It’s rich and creamy with little bits of crunch of in it, that aren’t ice crystals. (I detest smoothies that are full of ice crystals.) What makes this smoothie so rich and creamy is the banana AND cashews. The cashews are soaked, overnight, which not only softens them up but increases the nutrients in them and makes them easier to digest (including their protein). It also ups the creaminess factor by about 1000% in this smoothie.
What other goodies are in this banana smoothie? There’s a bit of vanilla and agave nectar (but you could use Stevia if you prefer), almond milk (for even more creaminess), chia seeds (for fiber and nutrients) and coca nibs. Not only do the cocoa nibs give you a great chocolate flavor (and a bit of crunch), they also give you a big boost of polyphenols and fiber.
All of these ingredients combine to give you a smoothie that’s not only nutritious, but highly addictive.
Are you drinking smoothies? What’s your favorite right now?
- 1 Frozen Banana (peeled and broken into pieces)
- 2 Tablespoons Soaked and Drained Cashews (cashews soaked overnight)
- ¼ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1 Tablespoon Cocoa Nibs
- ½-1 Teaspoon Agave Nectar
- ¾-1 Cup Almond Milk (depending on how liquidy you like your smoothie)
- 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
- Add all ingredients to your blender (add the chia seeds last so that they don't get stuck on the bottom), cover and buzz until everything is creamy.
- Pour into a glass, add a straw and sip away.
