My Favorite Pizza Dough Recipe

My Favorite Pizza Dough Recipe

I love a good pizza, but I gotta say that we don’t live near any really good pizza places. No problem. I just whip up this easy pizza dough recipe and I’ve got enough dough for two pizzas. Easy peasy!

If you’ve never made homemade pizza before, let this be your introduction to deliciousness. Seriously, making your own pizza allows you to top it any way you want and it tastes so much better than takeout. (Unless you live in NY, then you’ve go lots of choices for takeout…but making your own is ridiculously good.)

I started making Bobby Flay’s pizza dough recipe and gradually morphed it into my own by changing up and leaving out some of his ingredients.

One of the most important changes I made was to use double zero (00) flour for the dough. This flour is especially silky and makes for a crunchy crust that’s less chewy. Want a chewier crust, use regular all purpose flour. I keep the 00 flour around because I use it to make pasta too. I buy my flour online since I can’t find it at my local grocery stores.

Making your own pizza dough is not hard and doesn’t even take a long time to make. Well, you do need to let it rest and rise but the process is simple. It really helps if you’ve got a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment. I let the mixer do most of the kneading for me so I don’t have to do it. This takes most of the work out of making the pizza dough.

Once your dough is made, risen and left to rise for the second time you’re ready to make your pizza.

You don’t need to get all fancy with tossing the dough into the air, you can just press it out with your hands and if it’s not a perfect circle, no one’s going to care either.

I top my pizza dough with a homemade tomato sauce, pepperoni (or mushrooms) and mozzarella cheese. A relatively quick trip in the oven and you’ve got better than pizza shop pizza.

Try making your own pizza for a little change, you’ll be happy you did it.

Prep time
Total time
If you love pizza, you need to have a great pizza dough recipe. This is my favorite pizza dough recipe and it can be topped with anything you desire.
Recipe type: Dinner
Cuisine: Italian
Serves: 2
  • 3½ to 4 cups 00 flour, plus more for rolling (you can use all purpose flour for a chewier crust)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 envelope instant dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1½ cups water, 110 degrees F
  1. Combine the flour, sugar, yeast and kosher salt in the bowl of a stand mixer and mix to combine.
  2. While the mixer is running, add the water and beat until the dough forms into a ball. If the dough is sticky, add additional flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together into a ball. If the dough is too dry, add additional water, 1 tablespoon at a time. Let the dough mix for 5 minutes once it comes together.
  3. Remove the dough from the bowl and turn the edges under to form a smooth topped round ball.
  4. Grease a large bowl with olive oil, add the dough smooth side up, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put it in a warm area to let it rise until it's double in size. This will take about 1 hour.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 2 equal pieces. Cover them with a clean kitchen towel (not terry cloth) or plastic wrap and let them rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Once my pizza is rolled out and topped I cook it in a 500 degree oven for 10 minutes, turn the pan and cook it for another 7 minutes.
You can use the dough immediately or you can save it to use up to 3 days later. Sprinkle corn meal in the bottom of a container and drop the dough ball into the container and cover it. Pop it into the refrigerator. Let the dough come to room temperature before rolling it out. You can also freeze the dough. Do the same thing as if you were keeping it in the refrigerator, but drop it into the freezer. Let dough come to room temperature before rolling it out.

I LOVE homemade pizza! (Who doesn’t?) I am always trying different crust recipes, but haven’t yet settled on my favorite- I’ll have to try this one 🙂

We’re lucky enough to live within walking distance of several pizza places, so this is one of those things I just don’t make that much. I should, though, because it’s fun! And I can put weird toppings on it that the pizza places don’t offer. 🙂 Good stuff — thanks.

Hi John, you’re so lucky. I wish we had a bunch of place to pick from with good pizza. But yeah, making your own allows you to get a little, or a lot, weird with the toppings.
