Recipe type: Appetizer
Cuisine: American
Serves: 18
Ingredients
  • 1 Tablespoon Grapeseed Oil (or vegetable oil)
  • ½ Large Onion (peeled and diced)
  • 1 Clove Garlic (minced)
  • 1 9.6 Ounce Package Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Crumbles
  • ¾ Tablespoon Chili Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • ½ Teaspoon Paprika
  • ½ Teaspoon Oregano
  • ½ Teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (or less if you like it not so spicy)
  • ½ Cup Tomato Sauce
  • Flour (for dusting work surface)
  • 1 17.3 Ounce Package Puff Pastry (thawed)
  • 1 Large Egg (beaten)
  • 1 8 Ounce Package Shredded Cheddar Cheese (you won't use all of it)
Instructions
  1. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Farenheit.
  2. Add oil to large skillet and heat over medium high heat.
  3. Once pan is hot, add onion and garlic to pan.
  4. Continue to cook, and stir, until onion begins to soften. About 7 minutes.
  5. Add the turkey crumbles, seasonings, and the tomato sauce to the pan and stir.
  6. Continue stirring, and cooking, until everything is well combined and the turkey sausage is heated through.
  7. Remove from heat and let cool until you can handle it. (You don't want to put the scorching hot filling on top of the puff pastry...the dough will get mushy.)
  8. While that's cooling, lightly flour your work surface and open up the puff pastry sheets.
  9. Flatten the sheets out and make sure they're square.
  10. Brush the pastry sheets with the beaten egg then top both with a generous amount of cheese (spread evenly).
  11. Spoon one half of the sausage mixture on each of the dough squares.
  12. Spread sausage mixture evenly and leave a ¼" border on the left and right sides of the dough.
  13. Carefully roll the dough as tightly as you can (if it's too loose, all the filling will fall through the bottom).
  14. Use a large, and sharp, knife to cut slices of the rolls. I cut 9 pieces from each roll. Slice straight down and not in a sawing motion or you will shred the dough and filling.
  15. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (or liberally grease the pans) and arrange the chili rolls 9 to a pan. Make sure to leave some room between each roll.
  16. Sprinkle the tops of the rolls with a little more cheese.
  17. Bake for 15 minutes or until the pastry takes on a bit of a golden hue and the cheese has melted on top.
  18. Serve.
